Place the tray at the base of the drill press. Holding the stone between your fingers, bring the lever down so that the drill bit touches the stone. Do not have the drill running yet. Check to make sure the drill bit and the stone have lined up exactly the way you want. If the stone is not completely submerged, add more water until it is.

For drilling holes in small beach pebbles to use in jewelry, a 2.5mm diameter hollow coring bit works well. The bits they sell that are officially for Dremels are way too expensive, I highly recommend getting your bits from Rio Grande Jewelry Supply. They have nice packs of 5 for $14 as opposed to one official Dremel bit for more than $20!

You can drill by hand, but the drill press saves you so much stress because it keeps the drill perfectly in place as you're boring through the glass or stone. The last component that you would need to get is a diamond drill bit. I use 1.2 to 1.5 mm bits, and I buy at least three at a time because they are breakable.
