Jewel Cave National Monument is located in the Black Hills National Forest. It is located just off Hwy 16, 13 miles west of Custer, SD, 24 miles east of Newcastle, WY, and about 54 miles from Rapid City, SD.

Repairs to the main elevator that takes visitors down into Jewel Cave will require that cave tours along the Scenic Tour Route at Jewel Cave National Monument be suspended from December into next June. Completed in the late 1960s, the 300-foot elevator shaft at the monument in western South Dakota has undergone very few updates in over 50 years.
