From the looks of it, there aren't claiming natural moissanite, they are claiming synthetic moissanite that has been shaped into a gemstone. I suppose its somewhat analogous to not being able to patent natural white oak, but you could patent white oak that has been formed into a new, non-obvious, and useful container. Quote:
