The Scottish artist Phoebe Traquair created embroidery, murals and illuminated manuscripts as well as painted enamels. She distinguished between 'epic' (large-scale) work such as tapestries and wall painting, and 'lyric' (small-scale) work. In 1901she began her apprenticeship in enamelling to Lady Gibson Carmichael at Castlecraig.

In the 1900s Traquair took up enamelling, jewellery and commercial book illustration. In 1920, she was elected as an honorary member of the Royal Scottish Academy. Traquair died in Edinburgh on 4 August 1936, aged 84 and was buried alongside her husband in Colinton churchyard.
