Welding differs from soldering in that in welding the base metals are actually melted and fused together, creating a very strong bond. It sells for 1/2 to 1/4 the price per pound of jeweler’s solder. 1/16″ is about #14 AWG wire (most copper jewelry solder is #18 AWG, about 1/3 thinner).
